Bath Press Site

The Local Plan

The Bath & North East Somerset Local Plan was adopted by the council in 2007. The Local Plan sets out the council's policies and guidance for new development in their area. The Bath Press site is not specifically allocated in the Local Plan as it had been presumed that the site would be in active, long term use as a printing works.

The Local Plan encourages the reuse and redevelopment of previously developed land such as the Bath Press site, and provides guidance to ensure that new development will be of the highest possible quality and that it will be in keeping with its surroundings.

The Plan sets out the city-wide requirements for the amount and distribution of new development and will be used as the basis for assessing the suitability of any proposed new uses on the site.

History of the site

St James’s Investments has appointed specialist heritage consultants, Purcell Miller Tritton, to carry out a thorough audit to record the fabric of the main building and its contents and undertake a full architectural and historical appraisal.

The site has a long and varied history, dating from 1889, when Sir Isaac Pitman first built on the site.  The building has since been extended and rebuilt several times, the latest of which took place in 1934 which included the stone façade that is still in place today.

In 2007 English Heritage carried out an investigation of the building in order to assess its potential for listing. After analysing the history and significance of the building the report concluded that the building should not be listed.
